The English Department provides an inspiring environment to nurture and develop the vital life skills of understanding and communication. Lessons are designed to be stimulating and enjoyable in providing important literacy skills as well as giving the boys the opportunity to explore a wide variety of prose, poems and plays, and to express their own feelings.
Across the years, we appreciate that all the boys have their own individual talents; we seek to develop their creativity, broaden their love and knowledge of literature, and help them to write and say what they mean. In addition, we recognise that reading lies at the heart of learning. Reading is closely monitored, boys are encouraged to read during the holidays and class readers are carefully chosen for their level of engagement, excitement and literary value.
While the National Curriculum shapes the early years in the Lower School, flexibility in teaching is actively encouraged to permit teachers to adapt to the needs and abilities of the individuals in their care. Teachers use their expertise to differentiate appropriately, so as to accelerate learning as far as possible and to ensure the boys realise their full potential. There is constant liaison with the Learning Support Unit to assess specific needs and to monitor progress.
In the Upper School, lessons are designed to prepare pupils for their senior schools and are influenced but not wholly dictated by the Common Entrance syllabus. The ability to read and understand non-fictional prose, fiction, drama and poetry, and to write with creativity and imagination are all core C.E. skills.
For all the boys, the Department organises a lively and varied programme of theatre visits and series of competitions; debating, spelling bees and poetry recitals.
